Volunteer Visit Reflection #1: "You're Safe Ahead—Just Run."

If you were blindfolded and standing at the starting line of a 100-meter race, would you have the courage to sprint forward?

Last month, one of Lighthouse Impact's volunteer teachers visited our partner school, Urumqi Blind School, and sat in on a PE class.

What she expected to be an ordinary school visit became an unforgettable experience watching a group of students run toward voices they trusted.

The following is adapted from her reflection:

On April 10, 2026, I visited a special education school to see Li Linyi, a student I have been mentoring for some time.

Before the visit, I expected it to be fairly routine: catching up with my student, helping him with English, and speaking with his teachers about his progress. But what stayed with me most from that day was a PE class.

On the field, students from Grades 8 and 9 were having class together. Standing long jump, shot put, 100-meter sprints, 400-meter runs—the activities were not very different from those at any other school.

What was different was what stood at the other end of the track.

Teachers and classmates were always there.

"You're safe ahead—just run!" "You're safe ahead—just jump!"

They clapped, called out students' names, and used their voices to guide the runners forward.

To accommodate different levels of vision, the teachers carefully adapted each activity. Students with stronger vision participated in the 400-meter run, while those with lower vision ran the 100-meter race. Yet no one stepped back, and no one stopped because of their circumstances.

The students supported one another in countless small ways—guiding each other while walking, encouraging each other during practice, and constantly offering reassurance.

After I left the school, the voices from the other end of the track stayed with me:

"You're safe ahead—just run."

Outside of class, Hongjiang enjoys music and spends time practicing the hulusi. In this clip, he and his friends perform a piece together for everyone to enjoy.

We're grateful to have met students like Hongjiang and thankful that he's willing to share his passion and talents with our community.

Last week, we hosted Zhao Chen — with 170+ people tuning in.

He shared his journey from UWC to the University of Idaho, and what it’s like being one of the few Chinese students on campus. One detail we loved: he started a Chinese club, and a surprising number of local students signed up to learn.

He also talked about his interest in entrepreneurship and what he’s exploring next.

The Q&A was lively, with both younger and older audience members jumping in — asking about studying abroad, choosing a path, and dealing with challenges along the way.

我们全靠屏幕朗读用手机，可某银行APP密码键盘完全无法被朗读识别，连输密码都不知道按了什么。越来越多全触屏设备看着高级，却把视障群体排除在外。同时也希望能为不便出门的视障朋友，开发一款无障碍沉浸式探索世界的游戏，减少信息闭塞带来的身心压力。愿社会多一份无障碍关怀～

How do friends with visual impairments use online banking? ❤️ Reposting a plea from one of our students:

We rely entirely on screen readers to use phones, but the password keypad of a certain banking app can’t be recognized by screen readers at all. More and more touchscreen devices look modern, yet they exclude people with visual impairments.

We also hope to develop an accessible, immersive game for visually impaired friends who struggle to go out alone, to ease the mental pressure from limited access to information.

May our society be more accessible and inclusive.

Braille books feel different. The paper is rough, so the dots can be read by touch. It also makes the pages thicker and heavier, and after a while, a little rough on your hands.

Learning this way isn’t easy. But they enjoy every page.

Recently, a teacher from the Urumqi School for Visually Impaired sent us a message that really touched us.

She shared that the students rarely have opportunities to connect with people outside their school. Through the online English lessons with our volunteers, the students were able to see more kindness and learn a little more about the world beyond their campus.

She thanked our volunteers and said the experience meant a lot to the students.

We’re grateful to everyone who volunteered their time to teach. Thank you for being part of this effort.

最近，新疆盲校的一位老师给我们发来了一段留言，让我们很感动。

老师说，孩子们平时很少有机会接触外面的世界。通过志愿者们的线上英语课程，孩子们不仅学习了英语，也看到了更多善意，对外面的世界有了更多了解。

老师特别感谢所有参与的志愿者，也说这次项目对孩子们来说非常有意义。

Last month, we hosted our first 2026 talk of our Voyage sharing series with Jingyang Lu, a junior majoring in Software Engineering at Beijing Jiaotong University.

More than 160 audience members tuned in online, and several students joined live to ask questions directly.

Jingyang shared honestly about his journey, from primary school to university, the difficult stages along the way, and how he found his way into studying software engineering. He also talked about very practical issues, such as accessing textbooks, using assistive technology on the computer, and the challenges he still faces in learning.

What stayed with us most were the real questions from students and parents:

How do blind students build good study habits in primary school? Is studying computer science realistic?
What careers are possible besides massage therapy?
How do you deal with self-doubt in university?

Thank you, Jingyang, for patiently answering every question. And thank you to everyone who joined — both online and live.

上个月，我们举办了 2026 年第一场「航程」分享讲座。本次嘉宾是北京交通大学软件工程专业大三学生吕京阳。

京阳真诚地分享了自己的成长经历，从小学到大学一路的求学过程、遇到的困难，以及自己如何走上软件工程这条道路。他也谈到了很多实际问题，比如大学教材如何获取、电脑上使用哪些辅助软件，以及学习中的挑战。

讲座共有 160 多位观众线上参与，还有多位同学现场连麦提问，互动非常热烈。学生和家长提出了许多真实而具体的问题：

视障孩子在小学阶段如何打好基础？
学习计算机是否现实可行？
除了按摩，还能选择哪些职业方向？
在大学里因为视力问题效率较低，如何克服自卑？

Last week, Lighthouse Impact held a volunteer training session for volunteers from Tsinghua University, focusing on how to support visually impaired students in ways that truly empower them.

This was not just a conversation about teaching methods — it was a conversation about agency, dignity, and possibility. We explored how classrooms can become spaces where visually impaired students feel respected, heard, and confident — where they are encouraged not just to receive help, but to lead, express, and grow.

Together, we explored: how to describe the world with clarity, how to adjust pace and communication, how to build trust and a sense of safety, and how to truly see learning from the perspective of visually impaired students.

Empowerment is not a slogan, it is built through listening, equality, and consistent presence.

Can you ski without vision?

Abroad, there are many adaptive sports programs for people with visual impairments — skiing included.
Blind skiers wear wireless headsets,
and coaches guide them through voice cues about direction and speed.
They fall, get up, and glide again —

feeling the rush of speed, the bite of cold, and the freedom that comes with it.

Have you ever wondered — can someone without sight still see art?
The answer is yes.

A few months ago, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Beyond Vision Projects launched “Sense Touch: A Multi-sensory Art Programme,” creating tactile guidebooks that allow visually impaired visitors to experience artworks through touch and sound.

When sight is no longer the only way in, the world opens up.

Art is only the beginning — it reminds us that people with visual impairments hold the same boundless capacity to feel, imagine, and create.

你是否想过：没有视力的人，也能“看见”艺术吗？答案是肯定的。

不久前，香港艺术馆与 Beyond Vision Projects 合作推出「感・触：多感官艺术计划」，为展览制作触感导赏读本，让视障观众能以指尖与听觉进入艺术的世界。

当视觉不再是唯一的入口，世界也变得更开放。
艺术只是开始——它让人看见，视障人群同样拥有感受与创造的无限可能。

Earlier, we shared how volunteers use Be My Eyes to assist people with visual impairments. Today, we’re hearing from one of our visually impaired students about his first experience using the app.

"I’d heard a lot about how powerful Be My Eyes is, but since I usually have family and friends around to help, I never really had a chance to use it. A few days ago, my family went out and my friends weren’t nearby. I was watching TV on the sofa when I got up and realized my left slipper was missing. I searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. So, I decided to give Be My Eyes a try and called a volunteer for help finding my runaway slipper.

The first call connected quickly, but after a few greetings, there was no response—maybe it was a network issue or something else—and the call ended soon after.

Feeling a bit nervous, I tried again. This time, a kind volunteer picked up, and under his guidance, I quickly found the missing slipper. I thanked him several times before hanging up. Just as I was about to end the call, it seemed like he wanted to say something more, but I didn’t catch it in time.

It might have been a small thing, but I’m truly grateful for these volunteers!‘’

“If I Had One Day of Vision, I’d Want to See My Dad”

Meet Michelle Siu, who lost her sight to eye cancer when she was just three months old. But blindness never dimmed her love for music. From a school for the visually impaired to CUHK’s music department, she’s broken records, won competitions, and redefined what’s possible.

In a recent interview, someone asked: “If you could see for three days, what would you do?” Her answer? “I want to see my dad’s face. To me, he’s the most handsome man in the world. I call him my ‘万能侠’—he can fix anything.”

On this Father’s Day, we celebrate not just the superheroes we see, but the ones we feel—the dads who guide, protect, and believe in us, even in the dark.

With love and support, blind children can thrive, dream, and shine just like anyone else.

✨ Let’s build a world where that’s not the exception, but the norm.

萧凯恩，三个月大时因眼癌失明，但她用音乐，看见了世界。

从心光学校到中大音乐系，她成为首位应考 DSE 音乐科的失明学生，也曾多次在钢琴与歌唱比赛中获奖，2020 年更被评为香港十大杰出青年之一。

有人问她：“如果你能重见光明三天，你最想做什么？” 她笑着说：“我想看看爸爸的样子。在我心里，他一定是个帅哥。我都叫他‘万能侠’，什么都能修。”

这个父亲节，我们想说：有些“超级英雄”，即使我们看不见，也始终在我们身边守护。

👦🏻 Xuanxuan was born without sight or hearing. But that doesn’t stop him from exploring the world — through touch and smell.

Today, his mom introduced him to fruits. 🍍🍎 At first, he was scared of the pineapple’s prickly surface —his little hand pulled away.
But then came the apple: smooth, cool, and sweet-smelling. His fingers lingered longer.
And when they tapped the watermelon together 🍉 he couldn’t hear the sound,
but he felt the rhythm. He laughed.

Every tap, every texture —
a new way to connect, to feel, to learn.
